How about missed phone calls? Does it bother you when the caller doesn't leave a message? Are you one of those people who call back and ask "Did you just call me?" Never mind that they may have had the wrong number or accidentally "butt" dialed you or as my husband puts it "my blue tooth called you."
What about when you post something on Facebook that you hope will get a lot of likes? Do you have your alerts set up so that whenever someone likes it or shares your post you get a response.? What about your Twitter account? Do you find yourself monitoring how many people follow or unfollow you or hope for retweets and favorites?
It gets worse. Have you ever found yourself texting a family member when both of you are in the same house? I recently had two full conversations by text while both of us were in the house. Somehow it was just easier to figure out what my family wanted for dinner by texting than it was to climb two flights of stairs to ask. Blame it on cyber silence. I was wondering why my phone hadn't rang.
Take a moment to think about your cyber behavior. Can you go for five, ten, twenty, thirty minutes or an hour without checking your phone, tablet or computer? Take an inventory of your day and see how much time you spend in cyberspace. You may be surprised at the answer.
Have you ever heard of nomophobia? It's the fear of being without your phone. Believe it or not it is real and there is a rehab center in California that offers treatment for this condition. I just read an article by Christie Duffie that indicates 12% of people actually use their phone in the shower. The signs of nomophobia include: 1) Frequently checking your phone 2) Using it in inappropriate places 3) Having more than one phone 4) Carrying a charger and constantly checking your battery life.
Hmmmm....Do you have any of these symptoms or any of the ones I have mentioned above? Has your phone or tablet become an idol? 1 John 5:21 (NLT) says: "Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts." If so it's time to make some changes in our life. Be deliberate about putting your phone down or turning it off. See what you have been missing out on.
Well gotta go and charge up my phone.... See you in cyberspace!
